What are you putting off?
If you have a tendency to put things off or leave things to the last minute, don't worry - you're not alone.
We all do
it and for various reasons. Understand
what those reasons are and you're more likely to be able to come up with a
solution. Dig down to understand what you're
resisting or what's causing you to put off a particular task and it can become
much easier to tackle.
Sometimes it's a result of getting in our own way and surprisingly it can even be our sense of
perfectionism that stops us moving forward.
Wanting to get it right first time or not wanting to make a mistake.
If you have clear goals and your focused on what you need to do you're less likely to procrastinate!
Here are a few ideas to keep you on track:
Planning - knowing what you need to do and
when you need to get it done by can help prevent procrastination. Create a structure to work with and make it
easier to tackle those more mundane tasks you're likely to put off.
Schedule things ahead of time and block out
time in your daily planner for them.
Prioritize - if you know what's important you'll know when you're focusing on that oh so 'critical' but actually not very important task that suddenly
seems a whole lot more interesting, while you put off the one that's actually
far more important (and potentially more profitable).
Break It Down - often if you've got a
task that's too big, it can seem overwhelming or will take time to do, so you keep putting it off until you 'have more time'. Which of course doesn't happen until
it becomes critical and magically you're then able to find the time.
Get someone else to do it. We'll often put off those tasks we don't
like doing or we're not 100% comfortable with because we don't have enough
skill or time. So hand them over to someone else who does. They'll do it quicker and more
efficiently, rather than trying to struggle through or putting it off for ever and
a day.
Focus - once you focus on what
you want, it's more likely to happen. If you've been putting something off for a
long time - and let's face it - there's probably something that we've all been
putting off for either just that right moment or for 'when we have
more time, resources, money ...' give it some focus and make it happen.
It could be a project at work or at home.
If it's worth doing, then invest some time and effort and get it done.
Set a time limit - if you only commit to
spending 10, 15, 30 minutes on a task you're putting off, it can seem less
onerous and you might find that once you've broken the resistance that actually
it's not so bad and you're able to get going.
Use a simple tool like a kitchen timer or download Focus Booster to help keep you on track.
Need help with the things you keep putting off? Get in touch - let's work through it together and find a solution.
Until next year - enjoy what's left of 2012.
