Hello ,

Welcome to all new subscribers since last month.

How strange, last month I was talking about snow and this month we're basking in warm sunshine. Enough to result in a few red faces and burnt bits over the Bank Holiday weekend.  However, I missed most of it, I was working but more on that later.

Two milestones this month. Firstly, I've been producing this newsletter for over four years. I'm sure there are a few of you who have been with me from the start, so thanks for sticking with me. Others come and go on a more frequent basis, that's fine too, although I did wonder what I'd done to result in a higher than normal number of people unsubscribing last month. Something to do with the end of the Tax Year? People having a spring-clean of their inbox? From a standing start of 100 it's now grown to nearly 800 people.

Secondly, and far more exciting, I finished writing all the Chapters to my book. I still have to go through some editing but the bulk of the writing is done. It's up on Amazon at the moment, awaiting a cover image but it's available for pre-order, although it doesn't come out until September.

I've signed up with Twitter. Have you heard about twitter? I'm not sure about it's valid application yet or if it's going to be just another distraction but as I've got it synced up with a couple of other online tools that I use, I can do multiple updates in one hit - now that's what I like. Essentially it's a one-line blog or an easy way to communicate and share information. Failing that you can use it up date your mates on what you had for breakfast, what you're listening to, where you're going, what you're doing.

For the first time in a while I ran an Integrity/Focus Day with a few of my Time Management Group. I'll be running a few more of them this year as people were impressed at just how focused they were when the clock was ticking and how much they got done.

You can catch up with the rest of what I've been up to in my blog - http://www.clareevans.blogspot.com and follow me on Twitter.

Enjoy the rest of this newsletter.

Arriving On Time

Are you always the last person to turn up at a meeting? Do you find yourself always rushing to get somewhere and arrive hot and bothered (particularly in this weather?)

One thing we should always strive to do is arrive on time for meetings. In fact aim to arrive early, as you can guarantee that something will delay you on the way - however organised you try to be. It shows respect to both the organiser and the other attendees if you turn up on time and I'm sure you prefer it when people arrive on time for your meetings.

For business meetings it's particularly important as it creates a good impression if you're punctual. Just because everyone else is always late - doesn't mean you should be. For personal meetings it might be slightly more informal, so turning up a few minutes late isn't as much of an issue but being very late when people are expecting you at a particular time is just discourteous.

Avoid being late by working backwards from your planned arrival time and aim to arrive at least five to ten minutes early (if the journey is less than an hour) and up to 30 minutes if it's likely to be a couple of hours.

I recently attended a seminar in Bracknell and although I'd allowed 2 ½ hours travel time and aimed to get there an hour early, needless to say I hit the M25 rush hour traffic and arrived only thirty minutes early. It wouldn't have taken much, an accident, diversion or missing a turn off or junction, to have delayed me still further and it wouldn't do for me of all people to arrive late! I needed to leave extra early, as I know from experience that the traffic along the coast road gets particularly busy and VERY slow at rush hour and if I hit it at the wrong time that's an extra 30 minutes before I start.

If it's a route you travel frequently and you know what the road conditions and traffic are like then you have a better idea of how long it will take. If it's a new route or location leave plenty of extra time.

If your meeting allows time for registration, aim to get there when registration begins, NOT when the meeting starts. You'll need time to find the venue, park, locate the meeting room and get a drink before the meeting.

Too many people only allow for the actual door-to-door travel time and don't allow themselves enough time for the five to ten minutes either end. This applies when you're getting ready to leave. Allow time to get your papers together, gather up your keys, mobile, laptop etc. If you have an early start, get all these things ready the day before.

If you're catching a bus train or even plane - aim to get an earlier one than you actually need. If you happen to miss it or the flight gets delayed you've still got a second option.

Make sure you have the number of the person you're meeting and the venue location, so if you do get lost or delayed you can at least phone up and let them know where you are.

Even if you're meeting is local or just in another office - apply the same principle. Leave an extra couple of minutes to get there and get settled. Don't dash in and sit down just as the last person (you?) arrives.

Don't think you're wasting time if you do arrive too early - you can always make use of that extra time - If you need some ideas, I'll show you how in a future issue.

If you would like to have more time in your day, avoid being late for meetings, increase your effectiveness and be more productive, give me a call, send an email to  info@clareevans.co.uk or sign-up for one of my Friday Focus sessions.
