Hello ,

Welcome to all new subscribers since last month.

I've spending quite a bit of time out in the garden now the weather has improved, both my own and others. Planting up the veg patch for some home grown produce later in the year. Hopefully a little more successful than last year, when the slugs and snails seem to get most of it. Not exactly self sufficiency, I don't have the space for that but salad veg is relatively easy to grow in a small space.

Look out for my contribution to an article in July's Cosmopolitan - for those of you who read such things. This one's not about time but about making your money go further - particularly useful with prices rising at the petrol pumps and in the supermarkets all the time. I've just had another enquiry from a journalist land in my mailbox this evening ... that one is about time tips.

I took part in another Mums In Biz seminar this month. Plenty of business advice and time management tips for mums looking to start up or who are already running their own businesses. I've got another couple of time management seminars this month and my local Chamber is running their first Home and Business showcase later this month.

I'm building up the promotion of the book at these events. They now have an image for the front page and of course I'll be adding it to the website and various other places as soon as anything comes available. I have to say the creative process of writing something like a book is very different from my usual writing work.

Something I picked up this week is a short video that's on TED - My stroke of insight by Jill Taylor. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jilltaylor - fascinating viewing if you need a break from routine.

You can catch up with the rest of what I've been up to in my blog - http://www.clareevans.blogspot.com or  follow me on Twitter.

Enjoy the rest of this newsletter.

Following Up

It's all very well going to meeting but you're unlikely to be able to turn up, sit in, listen and then go home without needing some form of follow up.

Don't go to a meeting and then forget all about it as soon as you leave the room or get back to the office. If the meeting was productive, will have come away with a number of actions.

Add any actions to your Action List or put them in your calendar. If you agreed to do something or contact someone at a later date, put a note in your diary as a reminder.

If you've been at a tradeshow, you've probably returned to the office with an armful of handouts, leaflets and advertising matter. Try and avoid turning up with too much junk in the first place by only collecting what's useful and relevant. Sort through it as soon as you get back to the office and put it in the appropriate pile:

  • Action
  • Read
  • File
  • Bin

Don't leave it in a pile planning to come back to it later. You know what happens then.

Networking Meetings

Networking meetings have their own objectives and requirements for follow-up. If you regularly attend networking events, what do you plan to get from the meeting?

  • New contacts
  • Develop existing relationships
  • Business

Networking meetings are NOT all about doing business. No one likes to be on the end of a fully-fledged sales pitch immediately after being introduced. Develop new contacts and build existing relationships while networking. Give your business card to people who ask and when it's relevant. Don't automatically collect cards for the sake of it just because they're being handed out like sweets.

Following each meeting - update any new contacts into your contact system as soon as possible. Make a note of the date and time that you met and any relevant notes about them - type of business, useful information requested or given.

After the meeting follow-up with everyone you've met by either sending them an email or phone them within a couple of days of the meeting. Perhaps you want to continue your initial discussion, send them some additional information or arrange a subsequent meeting.

Add them to your mailing list so you can keep in touch, send them a copy of your newsletter or business info if they expressed an interest.

If you would like to have more time in your day, increase your effectiveness and be more productive, give me a call, send an email to  info@clareevans.co.uk or sign-up for one of my Friday Focus sessions.
