 Hello ,

Welcome to all new subscribers since last month.
We're into the final month of the year already and despite the credit crunch and the financial downturn, I hope you've been having a good year.  Not everyone seems to be succumbing to the doom and gloom.

The series of monthly Time Management teleclasses comes to an end this month with a call on Managing Your Inbox.  If you'd like to participate in this or the next sequence starting in January, book up now. Spaces are limited as you get a much more focused call when there are only a few people on each call but if you're not able to make the call you can still get the teleclass notes each month once you're registered. In this month's issue of RED Magazine - there's an article "Wanted 25 hours in the day" with my advice for three busy women.  It's the one with Nigella Lawson on the front.  There was also one of my short articles in BT Upload magazine, which goes out to BT Business customers.

If you're thinking of ideas for Christmas presents, why not order a batch of Time Management For Dummies!  Order the book through http://www.timemanagementfordummies.co.uk and not only get 40% off the cover price but also support Cancer Research. Alternatively why not buy them a gift certificate and they can choose for themselves. Amazon Gift Certificate

As usual, you can keep in touch with what I've been up to in my blog - http://www.clareevans.blogspot.com or Follow Me on Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/clareevans  and keep up-to-date automatically.

Enjoy the rest of this month's newsletter.

I Can't Do That

I was talking to a friend last week about various things and the words "I can't do that" came into the conversation - not that anything outrageous had been said but it was one of the thoughts that went through my mind when I was planning to write a book and even when I was going through the process of writing. Now a year later, I've proved that "I can".

I'm sure you've heard those words before, you've either said them yourself when confronted with a challenge or you've heard other people say them either about themselves or about others.

First of all, who says you can't? Is it you that's saying it or someone else? How often have you shared your dreams and ideas with someone and they come out with "You can't do that" - either because they don't think you're capable of it or because they can't do it and don't understand why anyone else would want to do it.

Can't, won't or don't know how? It has different meanings depending on our fears, limiting beliefs and abilities.

I can't do that - meaning ... I mustn't. Now if we're talking about robbing a bank (they seem to be have done a pretty good job themselves) or jumping out of an aeroplane without a parachute - then I have to agree, no you can't do that but if you've ever been told as a child that you can't do something then you tend to believe it, sometimes for good reason but sometimes not. Now that you're an adult, do you still believe you can't do certain things? Children who are told they can't do maths or can't paint or can't do sport often carry this into their adult lives.

I can't do that - meaning ... it's impossible. How do you know until you've tried? If someone has already done it and proved actually it's not that impossible then there's a good chance you can do it too. After all they said man couldn't fly ... he can now and in several different ways - directly or indirectly. They said you couldn't put a man on the moon - we did, or maybe we didn't and it all happened in a large hanger somewhere.

I can't do that - meaning ... I'm not capable. What you really mean is that you don't have the skills or knowledge to complete that particular task ... at the moment. That doesn't mean that you can't ever do it. Look at the people that can do what you think you can't. Are they any more intelligent, strong, braver than you? Perhaps they are now but they weren't always.

I can't do that - meaning ... who me? It's beyond your realms of current reality or thought. When I learnt to dive, I thought wow, I can't do that - it's the sort of thing that only really athletic, brave, French (too much watching Jacque Cousteau) people in films do. Not something that I could ever do but guess what, if you take a few lessons from someone who knows how, you too can learn to breath underwater and explore a whole new world.

I can't do that - meaning ... I can't do anything. When you don't have control over a situation you might feel that you can't do anything. Rather than worry about what you can't do, think about what you can do.

So when you're next in the situation where you find yourself thinking or saying "I can't do that", think again. What have you stopped yourself from doing this year that you decided you 'couldn't' do? What could you do next year? If you could, what would you do?

If you want to turn a 'can't' into a 'can', give me a call and let's get 2009 off to a great start. You know you can.
