At the beginning of this month I was privileged to take some time off and spend a week in the company of some truly amazing people. In a small group we conquered some of our fears and realised that outside of our hum drum, everyday lives we are far more capable than
many of us give ourselves credit for.
We also got to appreciate the energy, support and motivation you can get from talking to a group of people who have either had a similar life experience or who share interests and realising that you're not alone.
When you get stuck in your day-to-day routine it can be difficult to see what you're capable of or to remind yourself of the enthusiasm and enjoyment of things you used to do
when you were younger. You get used to what's easy, comfortable and manageable and you have responsibilities. You forget the dreams you had.
You go to work, you come home, you watch TV, you spend hours on your tablet or smartphone, you do your chores - you might even find time to exercise or catch up with friends and family.
You feel comfortable and content but are you also bored? Perhaps you're not sure
or scared to get out of your routine. Maybe you don't appreciate all that you do or everything that you're capable of.
Where are you stuck in your life?
What do you want to do to get unstuck?
Set yourself a few challenges - step out of your comfort zone every now and then.
They don't have to be big massive challenges but see what you
can do to shake things up a bit and get out of your routine.
- Take a different route to work. If you normally drive, take public transport, walk or cycle. Give yourself a little extra time and take the scenic route rather than the most direct route.
- If you always do something with other people (your friends, your partner) - do it on your own. If you usually do things on your own - do it with other
people.
- Take time to stop and smell the roses - the proverbial reminder to either literally smell the roses or just to stop and notice the things around you, things you probably take for granted because they've just become routine or 'wallpaper'.
- Step up and say 'yes' to something you wouldn't normally do. Feel the fear and do it anyway! This could be volunteering, conquering a fear of heights, talking on the phone - surprising how many people
dislike this or simply something that you don't do because you don't want to fail.
- Take up a hobby or indulge an interest you've always had - just as long as it's not related to your work. Do something totally different - if you're usually fairly logical and analytical, try something more creative - painting, cooking ...
OK, so those are the small challenges - how about a few bigger ones?
Walk, run, cycle ... hike up a mountain
