Hello ,

Happy New Year.

Yes it’s that time of year, you ate too much, drank too much, generally overindulged and had little exercise over the holiday period.

As well as most of the above, I spent a few days planning for the year ahead, reviewing last year's goals and defining new ones for this year. Have you spent time planning for 2017 or did you just enjoy a well deserved break?

I started the New Year with a cold, wet, windy cycle along the seafront. It would have been easy to stay indoors and say - "ah well, maybe tomorrow" but having got out and being reasonably prepared and appropriately dressed (mostly), it was a great way to start the New Year.

We all agreed that if one or other of us had cancelled or called it a day, as we took shelter from the worst of the wind and rain, it would have been easy to give up and go home. But we didn’t. (First goal, get outdoors on New Year's Day - tick!)

Being motivated by a group or sharing the experience with other people spurs you on to keep going.

Once you’ve dealt with the initial resistance or reluctance and taken the first step, it’s easier to keep going, enjoy the challenge and sense of achievement.

Step 1 - get dressed (wet weather gear).
Step 2 - get the bike out.
Step 3 - cycle down to the end of the road.
Step 4 - keep going ...

If it was always easy, we’d never get the sense of satisfaction or appreciate the effort we’ve made and enjoy the rewards at the end. The bigger the challenge the greater the reward.

Create your Daily Routine with a few great habits for 2017 that will motivate you and inspire your goals to improve your business, health and wellbeing.

Whether you’ve decided to create one or more ‘resolutions’ for this year or if you’ve committed to improving one or more areas of your life, what daily habits have you put in place to help you achieve them?

Perhaps you never make resolutions because you know (like many others), you’ll have given up by the end of the month.

If you want to make a difference and positively improve your life, step up to the challenge:
  • Know what you want. What is your compelling reason for change? What’s your overriding motivation and what are the results you want? How will you look and feel and where will you be in 12 months time?
  • Commit to it - tell someone and you're more likely to stick with it. Write it down and put it where you can review it daily.
  • Create a plan to achieve it. Be realistic, set aside the time and space in which to do it. Create your own routine for success, whether it’s daily habits or a weekly activity.
  • Start a chain - log your new daily habit, create a checklist. It’s more motivating to keep the chain going and not break it. Try one of the many apps to log and track habits. Create a Habit Tracker in your diary or journal.
  • Team up with a buddy or group - you can motivate each other and keep going when it gets tough.
  • Start small and build on your success. Change and modify as you see what works. Scale it back if you take on too much, too quickly.
  • Keep going. As long as you keep moving forward, you'll be making progress. If you get knocked back or trip up along the way, get back on track.
Established one good habit and it can have a beneficial effect and a positive impact on two or three other daily habits.
