Your habits are key to the choices you make with the time you have.
Like many others you want to work on your time management to increase your productivity and have more time to do the things you want to do. Whether it’s at work or in your personal life.
More and more the conversations I have are around changing habits.
Creating good habits around your daily routines has a positive impact, not only where you think it might
but in other areas too.
For instance, as a parent you have a chaotic morning from the time you wake up. Organising the family, getting them up and ready for school, sorting out homework, lunch,
sports kit ... frequently rushing out of the house, forgetting things and arriving late or just in time at the school gate.
Instead, with a morning routine in place, there is time to get things
done. School lunches are made, homework is done, sports kit is ready and you leave the house in good time without the usual rush and stress.
You were even able to find time to exercise while the rest of the
family were getting ready. And that makes you feel better, less stressed … and more productive, ready for work.
Or ... you arrive at the office and the first thing you notice is a number of new
emails. One seems urgent, so you respond to that and then start to deal with the other emails. Then the phone rings and a report is needed for a meeting later that day. You stop what you’re doing, find and update the report and deal with that request.
By now it’s almost lunchtime and you haven’t ticked anything off your list for today.
Instead, you have a structure in place for your working
day so you’ve already planned out what you need to get done.
You know what your priorities are and you’ve made time for your important work, including time to work on the meeting report, which is already
done.
You don’t have to react to new emails, calls or last minute requests because you have a way to manage your time as your workload.
By changing just ONE habit, not only do you have time to work on your own priorities but you get to finish work on time, which gives you more time for family, friends and to do the things YOU want to do.
So which of those scenarios best reflects where you are?
- A chaotic morning or ... a calm, organised morning routine.
- A reactive work day or ... a structure to your day … and your week.
As we’re into the final few weeks of the year, it’s a good time to reset and think about what
would make a difference to how you finish the year?
What habit(s) would you change either at home or at work?
And because habits are so important to your productivity I'd like to invite you to join me on the Build Better Time Habits Online Course.
