Do you have a clear end to your working day?
- Yes – I finish at a set time each
day
- Sometimes – work until everything’s finished
- No – Work carries on into the evening
Remote and hybrid working makes it more difficult to switch off. We're less likely to be 9-5, office based, clocking off at the same time each day. Work is more likely to
spill into your evenings leaving you exhausted and stressed out.
Â
Why it matters:
âž¡ Productivity needs good boundaries
âž¡ Creativity needs mental rest
âž¡ A clear end-of-day
routine is an essential habit to have
So, do you end your working day deliberately, or just stop when you've had enough?
Build an End-of-Day Routine
End the Day With Intention
End your working day so your evening routine allows you to mentally and physically switch off and relax.
Â
1. Create a Hard Stop
- Decide what time you’ll finish work
- Stick to the
same time each day (allow slight flexibility)
- Plan your day so your tasks fit into your working hours
2. Close Down the Day
Take 5–10 minutes before you stop to:
- Review progress and adjustments needed
- Tie up loose ends
- Log incomplete tasks for tomorrow
- Close tabs and documents
3. Set Tomorrow’s Priorities
- Pick your top 3 priorities for the next day
- Step away
knowing tomorrow is already planned
4. Create a Mental End-of-Day Routine
Physical cues help your brain switch off from work:
- Shut down your laptop
- Move your to-do list out of sight
- Close
the door, change clothes
5. Create a Transition Between Work and Home
- Take 30–60 minutes to shift from work to personal time
- Walk, talk to family, read, stretch, listen to music
Build your end-of-day habit and aim for consistency rather than perfection. Life happens, so use this as a framework.
🌟 Why a Clear End Matters
Without a clear end to your working day, work follows you home and creeps into your evenings, personal and family time:
- Thinking about emails while cooking or relaxing
- Worrying about unfinished tasks late at night
- Starting the next day feeling overwhelmed
When you stop working, switch off the lights and close the door to the office, (literally or metaphorically) you'll be able
to:
- Mentally switch off more easily.
- Sleep better knowing work stuff is taken care of
- Start the following day with a plan
