Getting back to work after the summer is a mix of feeling refreshed and already drowing in emails. How do you get back on track without losing the
feeling of calm and relaxation?
While January gets all the attention for fresh starts, new beginnings etc., for many people, September is a good time for a fresh start too.
The summer break a good way to get a fresh perspective and remind you what really matters:
- Work isn’t everything. Health, family, and life outside the office matter just as much.
- Constant pressure make everything seem urgent, but being able to step back shows you what's important.
- Routines aren’t boring
or inflexible, they give you a framework to remain focused and protect your energy.
That’s why September is important. It's not just “back to work,” but a chance to reset with that fresh perspective.
Why It Works
Psychologists call it the “fresh start effect.” New beginnings, whether it's a new week, a new month, a milestone birthday - give us permission to reset.
September is important because as summer fades:
- Teams and clients return with
renewed focus.
- There’s four months of the year left to still make a measurable impact.
If you slip straight back into "business as usual" you use lose the benefit of a September reset.
You're still dealing with your
overloaded inbox, crowded schedule and too many priorities. By year-end, you’re still rushing to keep up.
A Simple Reset Plan
Don't overcomplicate it. Here are four things you can do right now:
✅ Reconfirm your goals. What are the 2–3 things to get done before the
end of the year?
✅ Reset your routines. Block out focused time in your schedule for high-value work.
✅ Reconnect. Reach out to someone youv'e been meaning to reconnect with.
✅ Restart one habit. One that makes you feel better, more productive and energised in and out of work.
Small steps are more important than big, dramatic changes. Notice where and when you veer off course and get back on track.
Don't Leave It Until Later
Of course, even if you
return from your holiday with good intentions, there's always the pressure of dealing with what's right in front of you and putting off making those changes until "later".
- Later I'll start ...
- Later I'll set up a new way to ...
- I'll get around to it later.
And "later" turns into "never".
It's not just the missed task, it’s a loss of confidence and momentum that comes with it
.
This is why September is the perfect time to reset, interrupt any procrastination before it begins and start the "new year" as you mean to go on.
