Have you noticed how some parts of your day you're in the flow and everything feels 'easy' while others feel like you’re wading through treacle, finding
it difficult to start or finish anything?
Our energy levels naturally rise and fall throughout the day, not just depending on if we've had a good night's rest. Learning to work with your natural energy rhythms can make all the difference as to how productive you are.
Energy matters more than you think
We often focus on how much time we have, but being able to complete two hours of deep focus when you're at your best, is more effective than four hours of effort when you're tired and stressed.
When you match your most important work to your natural energy peaks, you're better able to:
- Think more clearly
- Make better decisions
- Finish the day with energy to spare
It’s not about squeezing more in to the available
hours, it’s about making the best use of your energy where it counts.
Spot your personal peaks
Make a note over the week:
- When do you feel focused and alert?
- When does work flow more easily without effort?
- When do you tend to slow down or lose concentration?
Those moments tell you when your energy levels are higher and you're brain is performing at its best.
Usually
your energy levels are higher in the morning but not everyone is an early bird. Some people thrive early in the morning, while others take a while to get going and are more focused and energised mid-morning (that'll be me).
Others build up slowly and do their best work towards the end of the day or even later
in the evening, once the noise of the day dies down (also me!).
Once you know your pattern, you can plan you day/week better:
- Schedule complex or high-value tasks during your peak hours
- Defer routine tasks, admin, emails to lower-energy times
- Protect your peak hours by limiting distractions and unnecessary meetings
Making small changes to what you do when can have a big impact over time. You'll get more done, make fewer mistakes and balance out your
energy.
